  LAST week, I commented on Joseph Stiglitz's unorthodox view of the Depression and the more recent Great Recession. The former, he writes, was largely attributable to the knock-on effects of a broad structural transformation in the economy, from agriculture to manufacturing. And the latter, he argues, is similarly due to the shift from manufacturing to service employment. I continue to see this as a mistaken view of economic history, but following on an exchange between Brad Delong and Scott Sumner (here, then here, then here) I'd like to add a few more thoughts.

　一人っ子政策のあおりで急速な高齢化が予測される中国。巨大市場での需要拡大を見越し、介護サービス事業に乗り出した日本企業がある。うたい文句は「日式（日本式）介護」だ。

■一人っ子政策　高齢化加速

　「気持ちいいねえ」。中国・大連の港が見える高層マンションの２１階で、認知症の金粉善さん（７９）がベッドに腰掛け、笑みを浮かべた。介護ヘルパーの張学兵さん（２３）に、体をタオルで拭いてもらっていた。

　ヘルパーを派遣するのは「大連維斯福祉商務咨詢」（大連ウイズ）。埼玉県と神奈川県を中心に約１００の介護施設を運営する「ウイズネット」（さいたま市）と、現地国営企業との合弁会社で、１０月に事業を始めた。

Christine Lagarde took over the International Monetary Fund in July after the arrest on charges of sexual assault of former managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn (the charges were later dismissed). Since then, Lagarde, the former French finance minister, has been preoccupied with problems emanating from Europe. She has been trying to manage demands from outside the region, and within her own agency , for quicker action from Europe’s slow-moving political machinery. The agency has noticeably tried to step up the pressure on debt-ridden Greece, and Lagarde led a very public push for action to shore up European banks. But the crisis still festers. She sat recently for an interview to review her first months in the job.

It is one of the true delights of a bizarrely entertaining Republican presidential contest to watch the apoplectic fear and loathing of so many GOP establishmentarians toward Newt Gingrich. They treat him as an alien body whose approach to politics they have always rejected.
